Pay attention to your tension ✔️

One of the most common things to hear these days is that someone’s life is busy, stressful, or hectic.
.
Stress from work, relationships, family. Rushing around. Full schedules. ‘No time’ for this or that.
.
🔑 A tense mind creates a tense body. And vice versa.
🔑 Stress often manifests as physical tension in the body.
.
It is very important to mind your tension. Both your physical and mental tension. It’s a two way street and they both feed into one another In somewhat of a tension feedback loop.
.
Start Learning what it FEELS like to be relaxed, the opposite of tense.
- What does your body feel like?
- What does your mind feel like?
.
It is very common for someone’s musculoskeletal pain to go away or be reduced greatly while on vacation. I have heard this story countless times as a therapist. Why could this be?
.
Notice your tension. Breathe and relax. Go for a walk. Find things that get you closer to that relaxed feeling you also know.

I heard Neil Pearson speak at a chronic pain conference and was fascinated by his work and I’ve heard Marlysa Sullivan interviewed multiple times. I don’t know Shelly Prosko’s work but I’m guessing she just adds to this powerhouse team. So excited to dive into this before starting a three month Therapeutic Yoga Intensive training.

In July The Hubs and I too a walk from our place in Maine to the beach. He asked me to hold our dog's leashes while he took a pic of the incredible sunset over the mountains in the distance.

I was looking at the sunset when Jazzy the labby lunged for something in the sand and YANKED me. HARD.

In that one moment I felt like the last 13 months of work on my hip evaporated. My left arm was pulled so hard and I felt it go right across my back and into my right hip.

I limited my movement for the next few days as I moved gingerly because my pain levels were pretty high, but I continued to move some, walking daily and even going on family hikes on the next weekend.

It was hard to find a comfortable position throughout the day. I'd wake up in the night with major low back pain and have to find a way to get out of bed and move a bit to try and lessen the pain and then try to get back to sleep.

Pain like that is exhausting. It can take everything in you to manage it and if you're like me, these days it can be hard to feel like there's anything extra to begin with.

It's now been about a month and my pain is virtually gone. I'm sleeping better and moving with much more ease.

It's taken daily work on my part, several sessions with my movement specialist and most of all it's taken me COMMITTING to believing that my pain was not going to linger.

I hate the term positive thinking and my radar is always on high for people spewing toxic positivity bullshit. However, I know for sure that what we believe about our body completely impact our outcomes when it comes to healing. Our thinking changes our brain and it impacts the choices you make about how you move.

I have a permanent structural issue in my hip that won't change, but I can change my thinking about how it will impact me and I can put the time in to do the work to build the strength I need to be able to move the way I want without pain.

That doesn't mean I will never experience pain. It does mean that pain won't derail me and send me into a tailspin of thinking I'm broken, beyond repair. It means I have taken the time to build resources around me and the skills I need.

Today I spent two hours in a class on the lymphatic system, learning how to assess for lymph stagnancy and then work on draining and getting it moving. It's always a factor when there's chronic pain present, autoimmune issues, digestive issues and other issues in the body. I've had tennis elbow for the past few months and using the lymph work my pain disappeared during the class. It’s been a while since I made my nightly Ojas milk. Dinner got later and later over the summer and I didn’t want something else to consume before bed.

Buuuuut, I can tell I’m in the brink of feeling pretty burned out and in need of some deep sleep (thanks #perimenopause) so I heated up the 🥥 milk, added some 🥥 flakes , cardamom, ginger and ashwaganda. By the time the kids are in bed it’ll be cool enough to sip and I’ll be off to dreamland by Ayurvedic midnight (that’s 9:30pm to the rest of ya’ll).

It's our final session of this summer's Love The I

It's our final session of this summer's Love The Instrument You Live in and this week we are talking about Core Stability.

We're talking about the history of the core, or as I call it Core and Peace and then diving into what exactly do I mean by Core Stability and how we look at it in the body. Here's a hint. It really has little to do with your abdominal muscles, and much more about how the axial and appendicular skeletons relate to each other through strength and mobility. And breathing, don't forget about breathing. There's a synergy in the body that we need for it to function well.

So much of what I see taught when it comes to the core just builds tension rather than resolving wonky movement patterns. Much of the movement world still thinks the road to eliminating low back pain and improving posture is paved by the transverse abdominus. Really if we can find a way to move load around the body in a better way, the 'core' can do what it needs to do with greater ease.

Many of the folks I work with are coming in at varying stages of postpartum (because you are postpartum whether you had a baby 2 months ago, or 20 years ago) and their bodies have developed layers of compensations. When we get through those compensations we find core stability because the whole of the body is moving better.
